Physicist Claims O’Leary Data Center Releases Energy of 23 Atomic Bombs Daily
Robert Davies, a physicist representing the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, has submitted an assessment claiming the proposed O’Leary Digital Wonder Valley data center in Alberta would release thermal energy equivalent to 23 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs daily. The report supports the Indigenous group’s legal challenge against the $70 billion project, arguing that existing environmental regulations are fundamentally unsuited for developments of this scale.
A physicist supporting the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation’s legal challenge against a proposed $70 billion data center in Alberta has submitted an assessment claiming the facility would release thermal energy equivalent to 23 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs daily.
Robert Davies, a professor at Utah State University, prepared the report to support the Indigenous group’s judicial review filing. He argues that existing environmental regulations are fundamentally unsuited for developments of this magnitude, stating that traditional frameworks were not designed with such scale in mind.
The O’Leary Digital Wonder Valley project, first unveiled in 2024, is designed to become the largest data center on the planet. Spanning 64 square kilometers within the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation’s traditional territory, the site is located approximately 130 kilometers southwest of the nation’s reserve.
Davies’ assessment focuses on the sheer volume of thermal output generated by the facility. He describes the project as potentially "the largest single-site heat source on the entire planet." To illustrate this magnitude, he utilized the atomic bomb comparison, noting that the calculation is a "first-order estimate intended to convey scale" rather than a precise measurement.
"Now of course, that’s not explosions, but that’s just trying to get a sense of how much energy we’re talking about," Davies wrote in the document. He added that the environmental effect would "almost certainly be large, if not extreme," and emphasized that all quantitative figures should be treated as preliminary estimates to be confirmed against the developer’s own filings.
The assessment was prepared specifically for the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation’s judicial review filing. Davies explicitly clarified that the document is "not a comprehensive environmental review, a formal expert report, or a legal opinion." However, it highlights significant concerns regarding the impact of waste heat on surrounding wildlife and ecosystems.
He further noted that he could not imagine allowing the project to proceed without full, comprehensive assessments tailored to its unique demands.
O’Leary Digital has responded to the filing through CEO Paul Palandjian. In an email statement, Palandjian emphasized the company's adherence to legal processes. "We also respect the robust and stringent regulatory process we must follow in advancing Wonder Valley," he wrote. He added that the company is engaged in "productive dialogue with Indigenous communities through consultation and engagement" and remains committed to this work.
The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation’s reliance on Davies’ assessment underscores the growing tension between rapid digital infrastructure expansion and environmental oversight in regions with significant Indigenous land rights. The physicist’s report serves as a critical piece of evidence in the group’s argument that the project’s scale necessitates regulatory frameworks beyond those currently available.
